ABOUT
Sebastiaan Bax (1994, he/him) is a young and promising composer from Utrecht, specialising in music for film, theatre and other media. He studied at the Utrecht Conservatory (Musician 3.0) where he combined his jazz piano background with a strong drive for improvisation and creating his own compositions. His music is characterised by an unconventional approach, subtle emotions, and a broad colour palette. Sebastiaan prefers to compose in an experimental and layered way, focusing on acoustic instruments and embracing the imperfections of live performance. These imperfections (and sometimes even the sounds of birds or a passing bus) contribute to the authenticity and vibrancy of his music.
Sebastiaan is guided by a strong intuition rather than being methodical, and enjoys collaborating with directors and creators from the earliest stages of a project. This allows his music to become an integral part of the story, helping to make audible what is invisible and adding depth to the narrative. Such an approach creates space for distinctive musical choices, even in sparse, sensitive or silent moments.
In 2023, Sebastiaan won the Buma New Talent Award for his music for Funny Feeling (2022) by Jikkie Schelling, and was also nominated for Best Original Composition in a Short Film in the same year. In 2026 he won another Buma Music in Media Award with his score for Gammel (2026) by Studio Figur in the category Best Original Music in an Experience.
His work for screen includes Call It Fate (Jikkie Schelling / Keplerfilm, 2025), an electrically charged short set in a coastal fishing village, Born Into You (Emma Evelein / Studio Studio, 2025), a choreographic dance film about human connection, and De Mot (Tobias Kersloot, 2024), a psychological coming-of-age story. He also scored the children’s series Outer Space (Aidan Vernee / For You Studio / NPO-VPRO, 2023). In addition, he has worked on several short films and documentaries, often in close collaboration with emerging filmmakers, as well as music for audiobooks by writers like Paul Biegel, and Rachel Bright & Jim Field, and commissioned work for cultural institutions and brands such as Nederlands Film Festival, Dille & Kamille, 4711 fragrances and the Van Gogh Museum.
In theatre he has composed for a wide range of productions, from the absurdist tragicomedy De Muur Rondom Shirley by the emerging Schwung Collectief, to Ôskwanteklip by Non Creators Company in collaboration with Theater Utrecht and Dood Paard. He works regularly with director Luna Joosten (Hier Stond Eerst Niets, Meta-moe) and with Studio Figur, known for their poetic blend of puppetry and scenography. With them he created the emotional Winterwater (after the novel by Lex Paleaux) and several wordless, music- and image-driven performances including Toen Mijn Vader De Nacht In Vloog and Only Strings Apart. Each year he collaborates on a range of both large and intimate productions across the Dutch theatre scène - from experimental works to youth and site-specific performances.
